Submissions Closed – Anthology Coming Soon

Hello all!

Just to let you know that the submissions for our first anthology of 2011 have now closed. We have received PILES of amazing submissions and have selected the final submissions so we are not setting into the wonderfully tedious job of designing the magazine.

We hope to bring it to you sometime in mid-May. For now, watch this space and start honing those submissions for the next magazine.

Minus 9 Squared 2011 Anthology

Yes, we told you we had an announcement. And here it is:

After an extended hiatus, Minus 9 Squared is back.

As the dust settles on a hectic January, we are pleased to announce that Minus 9 Squared is returning to a virtual shelf near you this Easter.

While it was always our aim to have a magazine every month, time just did not allow and we have now decided that it would be best to focus on 2-3 magazines a year, anthologies if you will so there will be more page space in this magazine.

And the best news? There is no theme so you are free to send us whatever your heart desires (or doesn’t, it’s up to you!)

Looking forward to getting back in the saddle and bringing the biggest and best issue yet to all of you good people.

Submission Guidelines:

Fiction: 3000 maximum.

Flash Fiction: 500 words max.

Poetry: 40 lines max

Visual Arts: No larger than A4 size. JPG format. Maximum of 6 images per submission. We will NOT accept entire albums to choose our favourites from so choose wisely and send!

Theatre: Extracts of up to 3 pages OR 5 monologues

In addition to your submission, please include a contributor’s profile of a few lines that we may use should we choose to publish your work. For examples refer to back issues.

As always, please send all submissions to Anna at minus9squared@gmail.com

EDIT: We are of course; always looking for front covers as well and the following are the submission guidelines for it:

We are looking for images with the following criteria:

1. A4 size.

2. Portrait format

3. The title of the magazine (Minus 9 Squared) somewhere on the body of the cover.

4. Something brilliant would be preferable.

We are accepting visual artistry of any kind, just as long as it’s visual and well, arty.

So get cracking folks – the front page needs you!

Immortality awaits.

Deadline: 31st March 2011

Issue Four Announcement

After an extended hiatus, Minus 9 Squared is back.

For said hiatus, we apologise and beg your pardon, there have been some personal issues to the forefront of our minds and our time was dedicated to them for some time and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.

However, we are pleased to announce that the theme for Issue 4 of Minus 9 Squared (publication date TBA) is LIES. We struggled with a number of choices for themes this issue. We contemplated a number of different themes but decided that they ran a little too close to the previous themes whilst this one is a bit more precise.

EDIT: We are of course, always looking for front covers aswell and the following are the submission guidelines for it:

We are looking for images with the following criteria:

1. A4 size.

2. Portrait format

3. The title of the magazine (Minus 9 Squared) the title ‘Lies’ and the subtitles ‘Issue 4 – September’ somewhere on the body of the cover.

4. Something brilliant would be preferable.

We are accepting visual artistry of any kind, just as long as it’s visual and well, arty.

So get cracking folks – the front page needs you!

Immortality awaits.

Webbing It Up…

There are some developments at Minus 9 Squared today. Some pretty damn big and good ones we think but hey, who are we to decide? We’re upping the online image of the magazine, meaning more material on our blog, our Facebook page and our IdeasTap profile and portfolio.

What we really want to do is make better use of the our online presences. While we are in submission accepting mode, it tends to be empty so what we want to do is add a few extra sections for artwork and literature – it can be new stuff from writers or stuff already in the zine, whichever they like.

We also want to see work from new writers and artists, in order to keep the catalogue of work constantly updated and constantly fresh. There is no theme so those who may have felt the constraints of our previous themed issues now have free rein to send us whatever they wish.

That way we’ll have a constant body of work coming through all the time and the plan is for perhaps the next issue, to do a featured writer and featured artist based on the work we showcase online. We’ll be posting updates on the main page every time the tabs get updated and hopefully we’ll be able to build up a big catalogue of work.

Any interested submitters and readers should do the following things:

a. Subscribe to the Minus 9 Squared blog

b. Join the IdeasTap or Facebook groups.

c. Email Anna at minus9squared@gmail.com

for more information.

Counting Down The Hours….

….until midnight tonight.

Yes, deadline day is upon us again but you still have a few hours to hone those submissions and get them into us before 12 tonight.

Issue Three has, in ways, been our most ambitious issue so far, opening up the themes in such a way that anything can be considered relative. We’ve had some really great stuff already so if you want the chance to have your work featured with us, get it into the email pronto:

Anecdote and Curtain Call…

My personal email gets a lot of spam. Thankfully, my email provider is a pretty cool kinda dude and doesn’t let any of it hit the actual Inbox. But out of curiosity I decided to see just what was in the Spam folder the other day, remembering my days as a Hotmail customer when they either thought I was a man looking for a ‘pump-up’ or had one with similar need.

Imagine my surprise when opening my Spam this all I found was offers of cheap drugs – Xanex, Valium and Vicodin. And that was when I realised two things:

1. I have GOT to stop mentioning House MD online because it seems to be a beacon to the drug sellers – I am not a drug addict, I just have a certain fondness for the one in the programme!

2. Maybe I should have put through and order because the sheer multitude of submissions we have been hit with in this issue is destined to give me a lovely, large headache for most of the weekend, and possibly the start of next week.

Our front cover contest has proved very successful and it physically pains me that there are going to be disappointed people at the end of it but unfortunately there has to be. We will certainly be running the same initiative in next months magazine of which the theme is a huge secret but will be revealed in Issue Two as we’re planning something BIG.

Closing date is Friday, midnight, after which time we won’t even open submissions so get your work in as soon as you can.

And if anyone can recommend a good headache curer, send the answer on a postcard.

Issue Two – Memory

Polling closed at midnight last night on the hunt for an Issue Two theme. The clear and comfortable winner was MEMORY with 54% of the overall votes.

.

So there it is: Theme Number Two, and as editor, I feel I have to overstate the importnace of this second issue. Issue One has performed so well that really Issue Two needs to be better again if we wish to continue this venture. So please, get all of your writings, artwork and whatnot into us, we want Issue Two to be bigger and better than One.

.

The magazine will be accepting the following categories:

.

Short Fiction: Short fiction no longer than 3000 words.

.

Flash Fiction: New Category. Short fiction no longer than 500 words, telling a condensed story. This new category is great for people who wish to write snippets. More than one of these may be accepted per writer if spacing allows.

.

Poetry: Poems of no more than 50 lines.

.

Visual Arts: Any form of visual artistry in one-two page spreads. Or text and visual like a couple of the submissions we had in Issue One.

.

Photography: Exactly as it says on the tin!

.

So there it is people, get creative and send us your work.

.

Closing Date For Submissions is April 30th.

EDIT: It has been pointed out to me via comment that I am an idiot, but in nicer terms than that! All submissions should be sent to Anna at   minus9squared@gmail.com

3 Day Curtain Call

The stage has been set. The magazine’s blocked, locked and ready to rock…

.

That was a terrible line, but you get the idea. Everything’s ready and waiting patiently (except page 14, we’re not sure what its problem is…) to be filled with wonderment. And we’ve got some serious deliberating to do once midnight on Wednesday comes along.

.

Yes, that’s right, midnight Wednesday – that’s D-Day, after which point no further submissions will be accepted. We’re sorry, that’s just the way it is. So be cool, be smart, get those submissions in as soon as possible.

.

Go on, give us even bigger headaches. You know you want to.
